We contributed to the mobile app for electric scooter sharing in three German cities.

How a ride goes

Five stops of one ride

Scroll and the route draws itself, from finding a scooter to parking it.

Find

Scooters nearby

The map shows what is closest and how much battery it has. The model is free-floating. Scooters do not sit at stations but spread across the permitted zone.

Reserve

Free for 15 minutes

A chosen scooter can be held for fifteen minutes at no charge while you walk to it. Nobody takes it in the meantime.

Unlock

No key, through the app

Unlocking happens in the app, no key, no terminal. The helmet is in the case under the seat.

Ride

A ride with location tracking

Location tracking runs over GPS throughout the ride. That is what the route is built from, and what tells you whether you are still inside the permitted zone.

Park

Anywhere in the zone

The ride ends by parking within the designated zone. The app checks the position and closes the ride.

Context

EMMY is operated by Electric Mobility Concepts GmbH, based in Berlin. Electric scooter sharing runs in Berlin, Hamburg and Munich, with a fleet of more than 3,800 vehicles, NIU e-scooters in Berlin, Yadea e-mopeds in Hamburg and Munich. The model is free-floating: a scooter is not returned to a station but left anywhere inside the permitted zone. The app has over 100 thousand downloads.

Our role

We contributed to the mobile app as part of the development team, not as a standalone supplier. The work happened inside an existing codebase, alongside the in-house team.

Technical approach

The app is built on React Native with Expo and TypeScript, iOS and Android from a single codebase. Two things decided whether it was usable: scooter availability on the map has to be current in real time, or someone walks to a vehicle another rider already took; and the position during a ride has to be accurate enough to tell reliably whether the vehicle is still inside the permitted zone.

Where we are today

The app is live in Berlin, Hamburg and Munich.
